My Teeth Are Sensitive — Should I Visit an Emergency Dentist?

Have you noticed that you experience dental discomfort when you consume hot or cold foods? Do acidic treats like orange juice cause sharp pain in your teeth? Does cold air bother your teeth? All of these symptoms are classic signs of tooth sensitivity. Does this problem call for a visit to your emergency dentist in Branford? The answer to that question is not always straightforward.

Understanding the Cause of Tooth Sensitivity

Enamel, the outer layer of your teeth, is designed to protect the sensitive inner layers from outside stimuli. However, if the enamel becomes damaged or worn thin, it is not able to do its job as well as it should. As a result, hot and cold temperatures can irritate the dentin (the sensitive second layer of teeth). If both the dentin and the enamel are seriously damaged, the pulp at the center of your tooth can become infected and cause extreme sensitivity and pain. Sensitivity may also occur when the gums pull away from the roots of your teeth, which do not have enamel to protect them.

When to See an Emergency Dentist

In some cases, tooth sensitivity indicates a serious dental problem that requires emergency care. You should certainly make an appointment right away if:

  • You see visible damage on any of your teeth, such as a large cavity, crack, or chip. Some cracks and chips are superficial, but others require immediate repair.
  • One of your teeth is a different color than the ones around it. This indicates a possible infection in the tooth’s pulp. If left untreated, you could lose your tooth or even suffer from systemic illness.
  • You notice other signs of infection. Pus, a pimple-like bump on the gums, and extreme dental pain are all red flags that may mean your tooth’s pulp is infected.

Sensitivity-causing dental problems that require emergency treatment may be addressed via root canal therapy, restorations (such as crowns and fillings), or even extractions in some cases.

When It Is Okay to Wait

If your tooth sensitivity is new and you have never spoken to your dentist about it, you should make an appointment. However, you might be able to wait a few days or even a few weeks without risking significant further damage to your teeth. This is often the case in individuals who have naturally thin tooth enamel or whose enamel has become worn down due to age, teeth grinding, or dietary choices.  Intermittent, relatively minor sensitivity could even indicate that there is a small cavity that needs to be filled.

Your dentist will evaluate the problem and recommend your next steps. You might need to get a filling, start using a sensitivity-reducing toothpaste, or adjust your eating habits.

Sensitive teeth are not always a dental emergency, but they are always a reason to get in touch with your dentist.
