If you are soon going to get your remaining teeth extracted, it is only natural if you are eager to rebuild your smile as soon as possible. A denture can improve your appearance and restore a degree of chewing power. But when exactly can you get dentures after tooth extractions? The answer depends on the type of prosthetic you are getting. Read on below to learn more.
Immediate Dentures
If you do not want to go even a single day without teeth, ask your dentist if you are a candidate for immediate dentures. These prosthetics are actually made before you get your teeth extracted, so you can begin wearing them immediately after your procedure.
The downside to immediate dentures is that their fit may not be as exact as you hoped. Plus, they may need extra adjustments as the shape of your gums and jawbone change following your extraction procedure.
Conventional Dentures
If you are getting traditional conventional dentures, you will likely have to wait 6 – 8 weeks after your extractions before you get your prosthetic. This waiting period allows your gums to heal and settle into their new shape.
Conventional dentures tend to have a secure fit that can last for a year or longer. They may also cost less than immediate dentures because they involve a somewhat simpler treatment process.
Implant Dentures
There are a couple different possibilities when it comes to implant dentures:
- Traditional implant dentures may be placed several months after your extractions. This is because your body will need time to heal after you get your teeth removed and your prosthetic tooth roots are inserted into your jawbone.
- All-on-4 implant dentures involve the placement of a temporary prosthetic on the same day as your extractions and your implant surgery. After a healing period, the temporary denture will get replaced with a permanent one. Keep in mind that even though you will get a denture right away, you will not immediately be able to use it to enjoy hard, chewy, sticky, or tough foods. A recovery period is necessary.
Which Option Is Best for You?
Each of the abovementioned denture options comes with its own pros and cons. Your dentist can help you weigh your options and settle on the one that best fits your preferences and circumstances. Hopefully, you will soon have a beautifully rebuilt smile!
