Wisdom tooth extractions are commonly performed for patients in their teen and young adult years. The removal of the third molars has become something of a rite of passage. But still, you might wonder if everyone needs to get their wisdom teeth taken out. For that matter, does everyone even have wisdom teeth? This blog post shares some important information.

Why Do Some People Never Get Wisdom Teeth?

Most people develop wisdom teeth during adolescence, well after all of their other permanent teeth have erupted. However, some people do not get any wisdom teeth at all! In fact, one estimate published in Dental Research Journal states that between 5% and 37% of people are missing at least one wisdom tooth.

There are a few possible explanations for why some people never grow wisdom teeth. The most obvious is related to genetics. Throughout the generations, human DNA has adapted to keep up with changing conditions. In the past, wisdom teeth were important for ancient humans because they consumed a rough diet. Food is much easier to eat in modern times, so the wisdom teeth have become unnecessary. Therefore, some people never develop them.

Other factors that might play a role in a lack of wisdom teeth include diet and environmental influence.

Do You Have Wisdom Teeth?

If you have wisdom teeth, you may be able to feel them behind the rest of your teeth; most people have one in each quadrant of their mouth. If you do not feel them, does that mean you do not have them? Not necessarily.

Some wisdom teeth are impacted (stuck beneath the gumline), so you might not be able to feel or see them without assistance. The only way to find out if you have them may be via an X-ray in your dentist’s office.

The Importance of Wisdom Tooth Removal

If you discover that you have one or more wisdom teeth, your dentist will monitor them during your biannual checkups. If it ever looks like they are threatening your oral health, they will likely need to be extracted. Failing to get them removed in a timely manner could contribute to problems like cysts, infections, pain, and other complications.

Wisdom teeth are extremely common, but not everyone has them! Talk to your dental team to discover more details about this fascinating part of the human smile.
